About chickenpox Chickenpox is a common childhood disease that is caused by the varicella zoster virus.
It is a highly contagious infectious disease usually affecting young children.
It typically produces a mild fever and an itchy outbreak of skin blisters.
The blisters usually first appear as red spots on the chest and stomach, and then spread over the entire body. The blisters become dry and form into scabs in around 4 to 5 days.
If these scabs are scratched or become infected with bacteria, they may then cause scarring.
